The Lead

Fog lifts by 10, then the sun does the work partly sunny and near 69 today, dry all week, 80 by Friday (2 min)

Fog sits over the county until 10 this morning, then it lifts to a partly sunny afternoon with a high near 69 in Carmel. Wind stays calm until a northwest breeze around 6 mph arrives after lunch. The catch is underfoot: three days of rain left the ground soaked, so shaded lawns and trail edges stay soft even with the sun out.

The week runs dry the whole way: mostly sunny 72 Wednesday, 77 Thursday and 80 Friday, then a cooler partly sunny 68 Saturday. Mahopac lands within a degree of Carmel every day. No watches or warnings are posted for Putnam this morning.

Two things worth your time today. The Carmel Town Board meets at 7 tonight at Town Hall on McAlpin Avenue, and flu shot season opened at the county clinics Monday; the last two sittings are October 7 in Garrison and October 19 in Carmel, both 2 to 6 PM.

Search answers

The questions Putnam searches this week, answer first, source after.

Where can you still get a flu shot at a county clinic in Putnam?

Two sittings remain, and both take adults 18 and older. Garrison Fire Department hosts one on Wednesday, October 7, and Carmel Fire Department hosts the last on Monday, October 19, each running 2 to 6 PM. The shot costs $30, cash or credit, and anyone 65 or older, or anyone carrying a Medicare card, gets it free. Registration is online at putnamcountyny.gov/fluclinic, walk-ins are welcome, and in-car vaccination is offered on request. One catch the county page itself hands you: its accessibility note lists a different Garrison date than its clinic list, so call 845-808-1332 if the in-car option is the one you need.

Is Verizon ending landline phone service in New York?

Not on its own, and not right away. Verizon filed an application with the FCC to end Plain Old Telephone Service in nine states, New York among them, telling the commission that copper lines cost billions to maintain, replacement parts are scarce, and the service is too slow for modern needs. The FCC has to approve the plan first, so nothing changes this month. The numbers behind the filing explain the push: a National Center for Health Statistics survey puts 38.4 percent of New Yorkers on a landline of some kind, with only 3.1 percent relying on one alone. If your household keeps one, the detail to watch is Verizon’s promise that any replacement, cell or internet-based, must meet 911 availability requirements.

What is on the agenda when the Carmel Town Board meets tonight?

The board sits at 7:00 PM at Town Hall, 60 McAlpin Avenue in Mahopac, for a voting meeting and work session, and the agenda packet is posted on the town’s Agenda Center. The free shred event the town postponed Friday still shows no new date on its news page, so tonight is a fair moment to ask when it returns. Call Town Hall at 845-628-1500 to confirm details before you drive.

Why does a Cold Spring cafe have 36 paintings on its wall?

Painter Selva Ozelli turned Terra Market Cafe at 116 Main Street into her gallery. Her install, Four Seasons in Cold Spring, hangs 36 oil-on-wood panels from coat-hook rings, arranged in nine groupings that follow the seasonal shifts, with hydrangeas, maple leaves and brook trout carrying the local subject matter. Co-owner Jessika Martinez told The Current the fit is natural for a market that works with farmers. Pieces from her flag series are also on view at four East Coast institutions, including the Putnam History Museum.

Roads & Rails

Fog is the whole driving note, then dry to 80 by Friday visibility back to normal by 10 AM, regular Harlem Line timetable (1 min)

The first dry morning of the week starts with fog before 10 AM, and the NWS has visibility back to normal right behind it. No advisories are posted for the county and the alerts feed logged nothing overnight. The soaked ground from the weekend storm still leaves the usual low spots along Routes 22, 301 and 312 soft at the edges, but the forecast holds dry through Saturday, so nothing new pools.

Metro-North kept the regular timetable on the Harlem Line out of Brewster and Southeast. The flood work the MTA funded last week sits on the Hudson Line, years from construction and on the other side of the river; this branch sees none of it. Check mta.info before you travel anyway.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: let AI summarize the flu clinic page before you drive.

Paste the county flu page into your AI chat and ask for one card: every clinic, its date, time, location, cost and who qualifies. Read the card against the county’s own page before anyone gets in the car, because the page wins any argument with the summary, and this week its own footnotes disagree about a date. That is the whole habit: let the machine do the scrolling, keep the source the source.

Reply with questions; they become future AI Corners.
