Putnam’s Columbus Day parade steps off at 2:30 today, firefighters pulled two people from a wrecked car off Route 6, and the budget hearing is tomorrow

Mahopac wakes to mostly cloudy skies and a high near 62 today, and the rain, if it shows, waits until after 2 PM. That matters because the parade steps off at 2:30. The shower chance sits at 40 percent through the evening, with less than a tenth of an inch expected, so plan for a gray afternoon rather than a washout. No watches or warnings are posted for Putnam this morning.
The week that follows is about as clean as October gets. Monday turns sunny and 65 for the budget hearing, Tuesday runs sunny and 60, and every day through Friday stays dry with highs in the mid-60s to near 70. If you have outdoor plans any day this week, later in the week looks better.
Two county stories carry over from the weekend. Firefighters pulled two people from a car that went off Route 6 late Friday night, and both were critically hurt; the details are below. And the budget conversation starts tomorrow: the county executive presents the 2027 plan at 7:00 PM and the public hearing follows at the Historic Courthouse in Carmel.
The questions Putnam searches this week, answer first, source after.
What time does the Columbus Day parade start today, and where do I watch?
Step-off is 2:30 p.m. today on Route 6 in Mahopac, and the route runs toward Chamber Park. Come early and you get the Mahopac Street Festival too: the Chamber of Commerce runs it from noon to 5 p.m. along Route 6N and South Lake Boulevard, with vendors, food and family activities, free to walk into. Grand Marshal Frank Miele, Mahopac’s former schools superintendent, leads the lineup, which typically brings out fire departments, dance and karate schools, scout troops and antique cars. Two practical notes. First, showers are possible after 2 PM, so a light rain layer is worth the pocket space. Second, Route 6 and 6N close to a rolling parade route mid-afternoon, so if you are driving in, park before 2 or plan the long way around.
What happened in the Route 6 crash in Carmel Friday night?
A single car went out of control near Sunset Boulevard late Friday night, overturned and went down a steep embankment, trapping two people inside. Neighbors who heard the crash called it in. Carmel firefighters rigged ropes and rappelled down to the wreck, spent 45 minutes stabilizing it and freeing both occupants, and a LifeNet helicopter lifted the two out from a landing zone Mahopac FD set up. Both were critically injured and taken to Westchester Medical Center. State Police tell Mid Hudson News the cause is still under investigation, and Carmel Police has not released details. If you have driven Route 6 between Carmel and Mahopac, you know the drops along that stretch; this is the kind of night that ends differently because neighbors heard the crash and called right away.
Can my business or group hand out candy at Trunk or Treat this year?
Yes, if you move soon. The county Youth Bureau’s Trunk or Treat runs Thursday, October 30 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at Tilly Foster Farm, 100 Route 312, Brewster, rain or shine, and vendor signups are open now with an RSVP due October 16. The Bureau expects roughly 200 to 250 trunk-or-treaters, which is a real audience if you have a scout troop, a small business or a community group that wants a Halloween presence. Decked-out trunks, costumes and candy are the whole format, and setup starts at 5:30 PM. Register on the Youth Bureau page of putnamcountyny.gov, and note the county’s flyer lists both October 16 and 17 as the RSVP date in different spots; treat October 16 as the safe answer.
Where’s a good local market for fall produce in Lake Carmel?
Kent Lakes Farm Market at 164 Route 311, and the county put its spotlight on the place this month. Owner Sarah Calabro, a Lake Carmel resident and trained chef, had spent years telling the market’s retiring owner to call her when he was ready to sell. He did, in May 2018, and she opened the doors nine days later. Today the seasonal market sells fresh produce, flowers, homemade quiches, empanadas and pies, plus cheeses, sausages and bacon from Hudson Valley producers including Harney & Sons, PickleLicious and Wallkill View Farms. If Thanksgiving sides are your weak spot, Calabro’s holiday menu of appetizers, breads, quiches and desserts has become a local standby, and it is worth ordering early.
Showers are possible between 2 and 11 PM today, 40 percent chance, under an inch expected before midnight. The streets that slow down are the obvious ones: Route 6 and 6N through Mahopac from noon to 5 for the festival and the 2:30 parade. County budget meetings fill Room 318 at the office building Monday through Thursday at 6:00 PM most evenings this week, with the full legislature at the Historic Courthouse Tuesday at 7:00 PM. No Putnam rail notes this morning; check mta.info for Harlem Line work out of Brewster and Southeast before you travel.
AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue
This week: speaking at tomorrow’s budget hearing? Have your AI check your math before you stand up.
Tonight is your last quiet night before the hearing. Say you read the levy drops from about $45.2 million to about $38.7 million and you want your three minutes to be about the difference, roughly $6.5 million a year. Ask your AI chat to turn that into per-week and per-household terms for a county of about 100,000 people, then ask it to argue the other side: what does the county stop doing if that money never comes back? The useful part comes after the answer. AI rounds, averages and estimates confidently, so take the two or three numbers you plan to say out loud and confirm each against the county’s own budget page. The math surviving that check is the math worth saying into a microphone.
