Students at Kent Primary School and Matthew Paterson Elementary School now have new playground equipment, paid for in part by a $100,000 state grant to the Carmel Central School District. The point of the gear is access, so kids of different abilities can use the same equipment at the same time.
The equipment list shows what the district meant. Matthew Paterson got a play structure with a slide, climbing ropes at two heights and a canvas platform, so a kid can choose a challenge that fits. Kent Primary got an interactive play station with a large xylophone and maze, plus a circular spinning platform that sits low to the ground with protective netting to prevent falls. State Senator Pete Harckham visited both schools to see it installed.
Both principals called it a first step. Matthew Paterson's Jennifer Darling said the school plans to keep expanding its facilities, and Kent Primary's Vincent Fino said the adaptive equipment gives students with disabilities more chances to play alongside their peers. Superintendent Michael Plotkin put the district's thinking plainly: outdoor space is part of the instructional setting, not a reward for the kids who can already climb.
The questions Putnam searches this week, answer first, source after.
Who is running for Putnam County coroner?
Three people are running for two seats, and that alone is news: the office has not been contested since 2000. The incumbents are Dr. Michael Nesheiwat of Carmel and John Bourges of Mahopac, on the Republican and Conservative lines. The challenger is Dr. Michael Strauss of Putnam Valley, on the Democratic and independent Putnam Party lines. Bourges spent 20 years with the NYPD, became a nurse, and served in Iraq as an Army intensive care nurse before coordinating the county's Vet2Vet program. Nesheiwat practiced family medicine in Brewster, led the medical staff at Putnam Hospital Center from 1992 to 2019, and served as interim county health commissioner. Strauss practiced internal medicine for 30 years, led medicine at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and is an EMT with the Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corps. The office investigated 197 deaths in 2025, 45 of which required autopsies. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, and the polls run 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The county clerk has budgeted money for it in 2027. Michael Bartolotti told the legislature's Rules Committee on Tuesday that he put funds in the 2027 budget to rent the American Legion hall on Cedar Street for mobile DMV service, and he promised a schedule of the mobile hours soon. For a sense of demand: a mobile setup at the Putnam County Fair in July started the day with zero appointments and processed 25 to 28 people in a few hours. Nothing opens this month, so keep using the county's regular DMV offices for anything time-sensitive.
The Board of Elections' official candidate list settles what earlier issues could only preview. Countywide: coroner (the race above), county clerk, family court judge and all nine legislature seats. Local: supervisor races in Carmel, Kent, Philipstown, Putnam Valley and Southeast, plus town boards. One countywide question: the charter amendment that would let legislators undo a county executive's veto of their budget cuts with a simple majority instead of two-thirds. Southeast voters also decide the Brewster Library's $550,000 annual operating contribution, and the county budget itself gets a public hearing Monday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse in Carmel. Deadline to register for this election: Saturday, October 24.
Which Putnam hearings can I still speak at this month?
Four. Kent's town board holds its tax-cap override hearing Tuesday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. at town hall, 25 Sybil's Crossing, before its regular meeting. The county legislature's budget hearing is Monday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse. And on Thursday, October 29, the county executive holds three hearings in Room 102 of the Carmel County Office Building at 3:30 and 5:00 p.m.: the accessory dwelling unit tax exemption, the charter amendment on budget-veto votes, and a third measure, Reso #247, posted alongside the other two. Each hearing runs from the same notice rules: show up, sign in, and you get your time.
The National Weather Service has Putnam under a freeze warning from midnight to 9 a.m. Sunday, with sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30 expected, and the Carmel point forecast puts tonight's low near 29. Today is the bridge: cloudy early, then gradual clearing with a high near 49 on a stiff north wind gusting to 25. Then the pattern flips dry and mild. Sunday clears sunny near 55, Monday 61, Tuesday 64, and the dry stretch runs through midweek. Cover the plants or bring them in tonight. No other watches or warnings are active for the Putnam zone as of this morning. On the civic side, Kent's tax-cap hearing is Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., and the county budget hearing follows Monday the 26th.
AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue
This week: asking an AI chat to walk you through a sample ballot.
The candidate list for November 3 runs six pages, and most of the names on it are for offices you have never been asked to vote on before; 26 years without a coroner race will do that. Try this: paste in your town and the races you care about, then ask the chat to explain what each office does, one at a time. For the county coroner, try: what does a county coroner do in New York, how is it different from a medical examiner, and what questions should I ask about a candidate's background. For the charter amendment, paste the suggested ballot text from the county's notice and ask what changes for the legislature if it passes. The chat cannot tell you who to pick and its summaries of local offices can be thin, so keep the Board of Elections PDF open next to it and treat the chat as the explainer, not the source.
Reply with questions; they become future AI Corners.
