The Lead: Maggie the longhorn is home after four days on the loose a four-day chase around Carmel ends at the farm gate, with a phone number worth saving

The cow is home. Maggie, the four-year-old longhorn who slipped out of Little Cabin's Farm and kept Carmel police busy for four days, is back in her pasture. The chase that made the local feeds ended with her wrangled near a two-lane road, and nobody was hurt, cow or driver.

Here is the part worth knowing if you drive Route 6 or the roads around it. Maggie is pregnant, which her owners think explains the wandering. Escaped livestock are not a rare novelty out here; when you see a large animal on the road, keep your distance, call it in to the Sheriff's Office at 845.225.4300, and let them bring the rope. Do not try to herd it yourself with your car.

A pileup of stopped cars was the worst of it. That outcome takes both careful drivers and deputies who know cattle, and the county got both this week.

Search answers

The questions Putnam searches this week, answer first, source after.

Where did the runaway longhorn come from and how long was she out?

Four days, and she belonged to Little Cabin's Farm before police walked her home. Video from the chase shows her darting across a two-lane road while one lane sat at a dead stop. WABC reported she is a four-year-old and expecting a calf, and Fox's OutKick counted the chase from her first escape to her return at four days. If she wanders again, the county Animal Control answer runs through the Sheriff's Office, 845.225.4300, and a phone call beats a social media tag every time.

Which Putnam food spot did the county spotlight this week?

Olde Tyme New York Hot Dogs in Meadow Plaza, 1895 Route 6 in Carmel. Jeff King, a retired police officer and military veteran, opened the counter in early 2024 and serves Sabrett all-beef dogs with traditional toppings, chili cheese dogs, hot sausage, knishes and hot pretzels. The county Tourism office profiled him Wednesday in its Small Business Spotlight series, which only features businesses that draw visitor spending, so the pick doubles as a tourist map entry. Grab a lunch and say hello if you are already voting at the Board of Elections up the road.

How many early voting days are left?

Three, starting today. Voting runs 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today through Sunday at both county sites, the Board of Elections at 25 Old Route 6 in Carmel and the American Legion at 10 Cedar St. in Cold Spring. Sunday is the last day; after that, the next chance to vote is Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, when polls open 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and early voting results are canvassed after 9:00 p.m. Anyone who votes early does not vote again on Election Day.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: plan one county loop that votes, eats, and sets up your library week.

Ask an assistant to build a one-day county loop and paste in the pieces: early voting hours, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today through Sunday at the Board of Elections, 25 Old Route 6 in Carmel, or the American Legion, 10 Cedar St. in Cold Spring; the Small Business Spotlight pick, Olde Tyme New York Hot Dogs at 1895 Route 6; and the Mahopac Public Library events you want, Medicare 101 on Friday, November 6 at 5:00 p.m. or Tuesday, November 10 at 10:30 a.m. in the third-floor Community Room, and Meet the Zen Hens on Saturday, November 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the first-floor Children's Area, for kids ages 4 and up with caregivers present. Ask for a schedule with drive times between stops and a printed checklist.

Two checks before you go. Have the assistant flag which stops need a reservation, then confirm each one yourself; the library lists its events on mahopaclibrary.org and registration goes through its calendar, not a third-party link. And keep the county and town pages as the source of truth for hours, because a schedule an assistant wrote from last week's data will happily send you to a closed door.
